The Birth of my Granddaughter 6/28/25
My daughter was raised around home birth and was born at home herself. So from the moment she became pregnant she knew she wanted a home birth. I took the summer off call and planned to head to Bend, Oregon to help her and meet my Granddaughter. My daughter had gone through some serious health issues prior to pregnancy, so on a routine follow-up visit with her doctor, we discovered that her liver enzymes were dangerously high. Birth isn’t always in our control. With careful thought and advocacy, my daughter let go of her dream of a home birth and agreed to prostaglandin induction in the hospital at 37 weeks. We all focused on making her hospital birth as homey as we could. Marisa, my assistant and her doula, supported her with hot rocks, her 12 yr old sister handed me oil, her husband was right by her side telling her how strong she was, twinkle lights lit the room. She kept saying “I can do anything” and within hours I caught my own Granddaughter and gently placed her onto my daughters chest. A moment I will never, ever forget.
